Although a native of tropical Asia, Bergamot is now extensively cultivated in the Southern part of Italy, particularly in the Calabria region. Bergamot has been used since the sixteenth century as a remedy for fever and as an antiseptic. It is also renowned for the flavouring in Earl Grey Tea. Bergamot has reported antiseptic, disinfectant and decongestant properties, as well as the ability to alleviate respiratory tract infections and fight cold sores and boils. It is considered relaxing and a general tonic, and claims to relieve anxiety and grief.
